UK Initiatives
National Air Quality Strategy
Consultation document published August 1999. Revised objectives for
eight main air pollutants to protect health, plus new objectives
to protect vegetation and ecosystems.
Indicators of Climate Change
June 1999. Indicators of climate change and its impacts have been identified
for the UK. These include climate and also socio-economic and environmental
factors.
Pollution Prevention and Control Act 1999
To meet requirements of EC Integrated Pollution Prevention and Control
directive. Also aims to prevent accidental pollution from offshore
installations and remove time limits from waste disposal licences.
A Better Quality of Life
A strategy for sustainable development for the United Kingdom, published
May 1999. Contains headline indicators of economic, social and environmental
progress.
Transport Bill
Published December 1999, this provides much of the legislation required
to deliver the 1998 Transport White Paper initiatives. It includes
measures for integrated transport plans, improvement of bus services
and road user charging.
Draft Planning Policy Guidance Note 13 Transport
Published in October 1999. A public consultation draft which aims to promote
better integration between planning and transport.
Planning Policy Guidance Note 12 Development Plans
Published December 1999; provides advice on development plan preparation, content
and procedures including consultation.
A Way With Waste
Draft of waste strategy consultation document for England and Wales
published in June 1999. Aimed at achieving sustainable waste management,
including proposed targets for recycling and energy recovery.
Contaminated Land Regulations 1999
Draft statutory guidance concerning the identification of contaminated
land and the clean up required.
European and World Initiatives
EC Directive on Integrated Pollution Prevention and Control
This came into force October 1997 to be implemented by member states
by 1999. It aims to prevent or minimise pollution of air, land and
water by industrial processes.
Amsterdam Treaty
This European Treaty has simplified environmental policy decision making
and included sustainable development in the tasks of the EC.
